A planning notice has been on the property for several weeks. Can the owner take it down now?
The safest answer is: check the specific authority's instructions and the status of the advertising process first. A calendar reminder alone does not establish permission to remove a sign.
Why the display end date is not always the whole story
Public-notice periods and administration vary across authorities. Greater Geelong describes specified on-site advertising periods and a declaration process for applicants. Nillumbik, by contrast, states that its contractor handles installation and removal and specifically warns applicants not to remove the sign themselves, even after the advertising period.
Those differences matter. A contractor cannot assume that because one council permits applicant-arranged removal, another authority follows the same process.
Before organising removal
Locate the original advertising instructions and any later correspondence. Identify who is responsible for removal. Confirm whether the responsible authority has provided a date, approval or further direction.
If there has been an extension, replacement notice or revised advertising requirement, the earlier expected end date may no longer be appropriate.
When the removal is authorised, pass the relevant instructions to the person attending site. They should know which sign is being removed and whether other notices must remain in place.
Document the site afterwards
A useful removal record can include a photograph before removal, the final site condition and any observation about damage or leftover fixings. If the work is part of a larger installation-and-removal booking, link both visits to the same property and application reference.
Where the authority asks for a declaration, it must be completed truthfully by the appropriate person on the basis of actual knowledge and applicable requirements. A contractor's photograph is not automatically a substitute for that declaration.
A better way to avoid missed removals
Record the installed date, instructed display period, review date, authorised removal decision and final attendance separately. That makes the job easier to manage without falsely treating the display period as a universal rule.
Arrange notice removal: SiteNotice Australia can assess an authorised removal request and provide a quote once the relevant instructions and site details are available.
