A property development and a proposed licensed venue might both have public notices on display. The signs can look superficially similar, yet the underlying instructions may come from different authorities for different reasons.

Confusing the processes can lead to the wrong form, incorrect timing or misplaced assumptions about who signs the final documentation.

Planning permit notices

Planning permit advertising forms part of the Victorian planning system. The responsible planning authority decides whether public notice is required and how it should occur. This may include an on-site sign, letters, a newspaper notice or another method.

The notice relates to the planning application, and the applicable period, placement and evidence requirements should come from the authority's instructions.

Liquor licence notices

Liquor licence public notices relate to a licensing application administered through Liquor Control Victoria. For several licence categories, the regulator specifies a public notice template, display dates and a 28-day display period. Some categories also require newspaper advertising.

The applicant should follow the directions for their specific licence type and use the regulator's required statement or process after display where applicable.

What should an installer receive?

For either type of job, supply the actual notice template or approved file, site address, required date, placement instructions, access details and the relevant authority correspondence.

Do not ask a field contractor to decide the legal duration from a generic service label such as “statutory notice”. The job should identify whether it concerns planning advertising or liquor licensing.

Evidence and aftercare

Photographs of the installed notice, its location and later authorised removal can help keep a clear record. The specific authority or regulator determines what additional declarations or documents are required.
