A liquor licence public notice is not the same thing as a planning permit sign. Both can involve a notice displayed at a premises, but they operate under different regulatory processes and should never be treated as interchangeable.

For relevant Victorian liquor licence applications, Liquor Control Victoria provides instructions about how and when the public notice must be displayed.

Follow the regulator's notice and dates

Liquor Control Victoria's guidance for several licence categories, including packaged liquor and on-premises applications, describes a 28-day public notice display period and requires the applicant to follow the specific dates and notice template provided.

Applicants should check the current instructions for their own licence category and application rather than relying on a general blog article.

The notice should be placed where people passing the premises can readily see it, consistent with the regulator's directions. If the venue has unusual access or display conditions, seek clarification before installation.

Check whether newspaper advertising is also required

For some categories, including packaged liquor licences, separate newspaper advertising requirements apply. A site notice and a newspaper advertisement involve different tasks and evidence. They should be managed as separate milestones even when part of the same application.

Keep the publication instructions and dates provided by Liquor Control Victoria, and retain proof of any advertisement that actually ran.

Document the display responsibly

A dated site-attendance report with close-up and context photographs helps the applicant review the installation. It does not guarantee that the notice remained displayed throughout the full period.

For licence categories that require a Statement of Display, follow the regulator's process and complete the statement truthfully after the required period. A contractor must not create a statement falsely claiming continuous display.

Plan for removal

Do not automatically remove the notice merely because 28 days appear to have elapsed on an internal calendar. Confirm the relevant regulator instructions and any required final documentation first.
