Installing a planning notice on an active or partially established construction site can be more complicated than fixing a sign to a quiet residential fence.

The building activity, temporary boundaries and access arrangements may change from one day to the next. A clear brief helps prevent an unsafe or unsuccessful visit.

Confirm who controls the site

Identify the authorised site contact and any sign-in or induction requirements. Do not assume a worker can enter a restricted construction area simply because the applicant owns the land.

If the sign can be installed from an authorised public-facing location, that may reduce the need for site entry, but the chosen position must still follow the relevant authority's instructions and safety requirements.

Check the fence or hoarding

Temporary fencing can move, and some surfaces are unsuitable for mounting a board. Explain whether the boundary is permanent, temporary or due to be replaced. If the proposed fixing is insecure or unsafe, the worker should stop and seek advice.

Do not attach the sign to neighbouring property, street furniture or public infrastructure without appropriate permission.

Keep the notice visible as works progress

Building works may later obstruct a notice that was originally clear. A changed gate location or newly installed hoarding can alter visibility. The applicant or planning consultant should decide whether monitoring or relocation instructions are needed.

A contractor should document what they actually observed rather than promising the sign will remain continuously visible regardless of later site activity.

Record access failures properly

If a worker is turned away, do not mark the job as installed. Note the time, location, reason and who was contacted. This gives the project manager the information needed to reschedule or seek instructions.

Consider the full lifecycle

Plan printing, installation, evidence, any required monitoring and authorised removal as distinct tasks. This makes future scheduling clearer when the project moves between stages of construction.
