An applicant might hear that planning notice advertising normally runs for around two weeks and then assume the same schedule applies during December and January. That assumption can create problems.
Different Victorian councils publish different holiday-period approaches, and individual application directions remain the important source for the job.
Two councils, two published examples
City of Greater Geelong describes an on-site notice period of 14 calendar days, extended to 21 days over the Christmas period, in its planning-advertising guidance.
Moonee Valley City Council describes public notification periods of at least 14 consecutive days or 30 days during the Christmas holiday period in its planning application guidance.
These are examples of the councils' published processes, not a statewide rule that can be applied to another application. Guidance may also be updated. Always check the current authority instructions for the particular matter.
What should be recorded before installation?
Capture the planned start date, display instructions, relevant advertising method and any confirmation from the authority about the holiday calculation. Keep the instruction with the job rather than entering a default number of days because it worked last time.
If the application requires letters, site signs or publication advertising, confirm how the authority wants those tasks coordinated. Different notice components may have different dates that need tracking.
Plan around practical holidays too
Printing suppliers, property managers and contractors may have limited availability during holiday periods. Consider these operational constraints when requesting a quote. An earlier booking can reduce risk, but only a confirmed booking establishes the actual attendance arrangement.
Do not instruct removal based on a system-generated date unless the responsible authority has authorised that action.
A useful calendar control
Keep three separate fields: requested attendance, authority-confirmed display requirement, and authorised removal date. That allows managers to track progress without making a legal conclusion from a date calculator.
